The Victims of the Baltimore bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was part of Interstate 695, which is the beltway bypass around Baltimore. Interstate highways are owned and operated by the states. The Francis Scott Key Bridge in particular was owned and operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority, a separate agency under the Maryland Department of Transportation responsible for operating Maryland’s toll bridges, tunnels, and highways. The tolls collected by the bridge go to the Maryland Transportation Authority, not to the federal treasury. This unfortunate and tragic accident will forever live in our hearts and minds. The victims and their families continue to express their pain. Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38, from Hondouras , Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, from Guatemala and Miguel Luna from El Salvador. Were all said to be hard working men. Devoted to their families and friends and full of life. The Mayor of Baltimore, Brandon Scott, was 36 when he won his race in Baltimore in November 2020. In a city half a century older than the United States, Scott became the youngest mayor in its history. Has shown what leadership looks like when faced with adversity.

22-year-old Netflix worker vanishes after just starting job in California

A recent college graduate went missing in California only two weeks after starting a job at Netflix as a software engineer, the family told news outlets. Yohanes Kidane graduated from Cornell University and moved from New York to San Francisco to work at Netflix, his family told CBS News. Kidane was last seen at 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 14 getting into an Uber in San Jose, the station reported. According to Yosief Kidane, the family hasn't been able to get in touch with Yohanes since Monday evening. Since then, his phone tracker hasn't moved from a spot near Golden Gate Bridge. The family has reported the case to the San Jose police. “Two young colleagues of his saw him and were able to talk to him," said Yosief Kidane. "He said he was heading to San Francisco to maybe meet a friend. The last footage I've seen of him was leaving his apartment building and getting into a black Toyota Camry."

Since then, several of the young man's belongings have turned up at police stations, but there's been no trace of Yohanes Kidane yet.

On Tuesday morning, the family said that a commuter found Yohanes' phone and wallet "on a grassy hill" and brought them to the Marin California Highway Patrol's office.

"Someone who was in San Rafael, who was on a commute, saw a phone and wallet sitting on this small grassy hill right between the Welcome Center and coffee shop," Yohanes' older brother said. "Thirty bucks in cash was in his wallet, IDs cards, phone untouched."

The following day, the family said that the police found Yohanes Kidane's backpack near the Golden Gate Bridge, the two laptops and personal documents "seemingly untouched." Members of the public with information about Yohanes Kidane's whereabouts can contact the San Jose Police Department at (408) 277-8900 (reference case number 23-227-0531) or his relatives at (585) 489-4880 or 585-500-5220.

Greece: Shipwreck Leaving Hundreds Dead and Missing

More than 80 people are confirmed dead and hundreds are missing after an overcrowded fishing boat capsized off the Greek coast. The tragedy has sparked outrage across Europe and the EU has been accused of complicity. Media investigations, NGO reports and testimonies by survivors contradict official Greek version of events but so far the only people under legal scrutiny are nine survivors charged over crewing the boat.

There were approximately 750 people reportedly including 100 children onboard a fishing boat that departed Tobruk in Libya attempting to reach Italy when it capsized in the Ionian Sea, 87 km from the Greek coast off Pylos on 14 June and just 104 have been rescued – reportedly by a private superyacht reacting to distress calls. By 19 June, more than 80 bodies had been recovered leaving more than 500 missing. Leaked testimonies from survivors describe how Pakistani nationals were forced below deck, while other nationalities were allowed on the top deck, with a greater chance of surviving a capsize. The testimonies also reveal how women and children were effectively “locked up” in the hold to be “protected” by men on the overcrowded vessel. Guardian reported on 18 June: “No women or children are thought to be among the survivors, while reports from Pakistan on Saturday indicate hundreds of its citizens may have died when the rusty trawler sank off the Peloponnese peninsula. Local media reported that at least 298 Pakistanis died, 135 from the Pakistani side of Kashmir”.

TRUMP Headed to New York to face charges

A plane carrying former U.S. President Donald Trump flew from a Florida airport bound for New York City on Monday as he prepared to face charges stemming from an investigation into hush money paid to a porn star before the 2016 election.

With New York taking security precautions and the mayor telling any potential rabble-rousers to behave, Trump was due to surrender at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office on Tuesday and will likely be fingerprinted prior to appearing before a judge for an arraignment where he will plead not guilty.

Trump, a Republican seeking to regain the presidency in 2024, is the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges.

Beefing up his legal team, Trump hired Todd Blanche, a prominent white-collar criminal defense lawyer and a former federal prosecutor, to lead his defense, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Blanche previously represented Paul Manafort, Trump's 2016 campaign chairman, when Manafort was hit with New York state fraud charges after being sentenced to prison for federal crimes. The state charges were eventually dismissed and Trump pardoned Manafort before he left office. Blanche also previously represented Igor Fruman, who was an associate of former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani.

The specific charges in the Trump grand jury indictment have yet to be disclosed. Trump has said he is innocent. He and his allies have portrayed the charges as politically motivated.

Alex Murdaugh will now spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul.

Judge Clifton Newman handed down the sentence Friday morning, following a guilty verdict from the jury.Murdaugh remained stone faced as Judge Newman sentenced him to life in prison for each murder, to be served consecutively.

Twice during the court proceedings, Murdaugh spoke up to declare his innocence, again saying he wasn’t the one who shot Paul and Maggie.

“It might not have been you,” Newman said. “It might have been the monster you become when you take 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 opioid pills. Maybe you become another person.”

Throughout the trial, prosecutors detailed Murdaugh’s alleged financial crimes, serving as motive for the murders.

But the defense argued Murdaugh had a great relationship with the victims and claimed the state’s theory doesn’t make sense.

One juror told ABC News it was the video from the kennels that convinced him of Murdaugh’s guilt.

Murdaugh didn’t admit he was at the kennels the night of the murders until he took the stand during the trial.

When questioned outside the courthouse Friday, prosecutor John Meadors said: “The whole thing was tragic. It was sad. God bless Bubba.”

Bubba was the dog Alex was heard calling for in the kennel video, the only thing that put Murdaugh at the crime scene minutes before the murders.

Nurse adopts the NICU preemie who didn’t have a visitor for 5 months

As the Senior Director of Nursing at Franciscan Children’s in Massachusetts, Liz Smith was feeling pretty good about her professional life but felt like something was missing from her personal life. She’d always wanted to be a mom, but by 2016 that hadn’t happened for her yet. When Gisele was a newborn, she was in state custody because her mother used drugs during pregnancy, reported the Washington Post. As such, the baby developed neonatal abstinence syndrome, lung complications, and had weak oral muscles, so she fed through a gastric tube. According to Smith, Gisele’s father also battled addiction.

Gisele was transferred to Franciscan in October 2016, but Smith didn’t meet her until March the next year when she switched units within the hospital. Her parents had a few supervised visits, but no one else came. Eventually, they disengaged and their connection faded away. I don’t think they realized what her medical needs required.”

In July 2017, Smith sought adoption while the state searched for a possible parent within the toddler’s extended family. “My nephew asked me, ‘What if we lose Gisele? She’s part of our family,'” Smith tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

Gisele was gaining gross motor and social skills, although she still wore her feeding tube, which delivered formula and pureed foods to her stomach.

On October 18th, reported the Washington Post, Smith legally adopted her daughter. Gisele attends daycare three times a week, and in April, she’s entering preschool.

“Gisele is totally caught up with her milestones — and she’s off-the-charts socially,” Smith tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “From being immobile in a crib at 8-months-old to where she is now, is unthinkable.”

Former Titans running back LenDale White talks medical emergency

Former Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White revealed he almost lost his life to a heart attack at 34 years old.

During a sit-down with the "I Am Athlete" podcast, White spoke at length about how his left anterior descending artery clogged in 2019, which is what medical professionals sometimes refer to as the "widowmaker" because of how serious it was. “I had a heart attack,” White said. “My four-year anniversary was January 20th, and my LAD (left anterior descending artery) was clogged, and I had to have two stints shot into my heart to where my blood could flow again.”

White, 38, was told he suffered a terrifying heart attack that should have killed him.

“It’s called a widow maker because you’re really not supposed to make it back from that,” White said. “I never really knew all of that until just recently I got into because I got so scared to even understand, like when you 34 and have a heart attack, that change your life forever.”

The former USC star changed his diet to improve his health.

“With that being said, the physical got to change, and I definitely workout now,” White said.

Earlier in the episode, former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch gave his reason as to why he went viral in 2015 after he answered every reporter’s questions with, “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”

Lynch admitted he was fined over $1.2 million throughout his career because he violated the NFL’s protocols that require players to make themselves available to the media at least once 10-15 minutes after the game ends. He said he would shower and leave to go see his family.

Nearly 5 million bottles of Fabuloso recalled because of bacterial contamination

Some Fabuloso cleaning products were recalled Wednesday over a risk of bacteria contamination, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. As of the recall, no incidents or injuries had been reported.

The company said a preservative “was not added at the intended levels during manufacturing,” which resulted in the growth of Pseudomonas species, a bacteria found widely in soil and water. Fabuloso is owned by Colgate-Palmolive. The recalled products were sold online through Amazon and other websites as well as in brick-and-mortar stores including Dollar General, Family Dollar, Walmart and Home Depot from December 2022 through January. Several sizes of Fabuloso were recalled in scents including lavender, lemon and ocean. The recalled products may include Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, bacteria that can enter the body through inhalation, the eyes or a break in the skin. The recall notice said that people with healthy immune systems were not usually affected by the bacteria, but people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices or underlying lung conditions could contract a serious infection if exposed to it.

What To Do If You Have Recalled Fabuloso Products

f you purchased any of the recalled Fabuloso products, the CPSC advises you stop using it and dispose of it in its container.

Colgate-Palmolive is offering a refund to anyone who purchased the affected products. To claim it, fill out this form on the company’s web site. You’ll also need to submit photos of the UPS and manufacturing codes. Instructions for where to find that information on the Fabuloso container can be found on the company’s web site as well.

You can expect refunds within four to six weeks.

School honors young girl wrongly reported to police

Three months after a neighbour called the police on her for catching insects, nine-year-old Bobbi Wilson has earned honours from Yale University for her scientific prowess.

Bobbi, a black girl from New Jersey, was spraying her neighborhood with bug spray to kill invasive lanternflies when police approached her. The incident has prompted a discussion on racial profiling in the US. Bobbi's lanternflies will now be housed at the prestigious university.

Known as "Bobbi Wonder" by her family and friends, the little girl was recognized for her efforts in combating the invasive insect in her hometown by Yale's School of Public Health. Last month, she visited the university where a label bearing her name on one of the lanternfly specimens will sit permanently in Yale's Peabody Museum.

"Yale doesn't normally do anything like this … this is something unique to Bobbi," said Ijeoma Opara, an assistant professor at School of Public Health.

"We wanted to show her bravery and how inspiring she is, and we just want to make sure she continues to feel honored and loved by the Yale community. "It was her second time visiting the Ivy League campus, Ms. Opara said. She was first invited to the school in November after a police complaint against her made headlines.

On 22 October, a neighbour had reported Bobbi to the police as a suspicious person while she was out obliterating lanternflies using a homemade repellent of water, dish soap and apple cider vinegar - a recipe she found on Tik Tok.

The neighbour reported her as "a little black woman walking, spraying stuff on the sidewalks and trees", according to a recording of the call obtained by CNN Network. Spotted lanternflies are invasive insects that can hurt trees and ruin crops. Last year, scientists and state authorities encouraged people to kill the bugs, whenever and wherever they found them, and also advised people to destroy their eggs.

Bobbi's mother, Monique Joseph, said the complaint was an example of racial profiling and that the neighbour had put her daughter in harm's way by calling the police on her.

The Senseless Murder of Tyre Nichols

Five former Memphis police officers have been fired and charged with murder in the death of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who died three days after a violent traffic stop. Video footage of Nichols' arrest was released Friday evening. His family urged any demonstrators to protest peacefully.

Authorities have released few details on what led to Nichols' arrest and what exactly happened after he was pulled over. Here is what we know so far about his death and the aftermath.

Who was Tyre Nichols?

Nichols, a 29-year-old father who worked at FedEx, has been described by friends and family as an avid skateboarder.

He lived in Sacramento before moving to Memphis, and friends from his teenage years in California spoke to CBS Sacramento about how much joy he brought to those around him.

"I know Tyre. I know how great he was," said Jerome Neal, who had just visited Nichols in Memphis in November.

"I see him interacting with like almost everybody at the skate park when I'm with him. He was just well-loved."

"He just touches anybody who gets around him," another friend, Austin Robert, told the station.

"He's a fantastic person and that's how I really want everybody to remember him."

Strickland also said that the city is "initiating an outside, independent review of the training, policies and operations of our specialized units." Story is still developing.

Five officers have been charged with murdering Tyre Nichols by allegedly beating him during a traffic stop earlier this month. Officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith were all fired Friday evening. They had been with the department since Aug. 2020, Aug. 2020, March 2018, March 2017, and March 2018, respectively. After watching the footage released on Friday night, Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr. of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said two other officers who responded to the scene were "relieved of duty pending an investigation."

Monterey Park mass shooting

As the investigation continues into the mass shooting that occurred at a Monterey Park dance studio late Saturday night, a prominent member of the community with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce believes the suspect's possible motive may be related to a domestic dispute.

The suspected gunman accused of shooting and killing 10 people at a ballroom dance studio amid Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park  is dead after an hours-long manhunt that stretched across Los Angeles County, Sheriff Robert Luna announced Sunday evening.

The suspect, identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a SWAT scene in Torrance, the Luna said. Story still developing.

Will the con man in Congress get a pass?

NY- Is anything real about him? Rep. George Santos, the con man in Congress, misled New York voters with his resume and pretty much his very existence- Allegedly.

Let’s start with, he did not graduate from college. He’s never worked at Goldman Sachs. He’s not Jewish.

But Santos like most con men allegedly, has ignored requests from voters and fellow politicians to resign, he’ll have his job for the next two years.

Federal prosecutors in New York are investigating his finances. Democrats have asked the House Ethics Committee to look into Santos’ financial disclosures. Authorities in Brazil may revive a 2008 case regarding stolen checks. And according to many onlookers. He is using secret codes and signs while holding the floor. While federal investigators are focusing on President Biden’s files from his stint as Vice President. The deflection from Santos’s indiscretions are very noticeable. What is the current state of America?

6-Year-Old Shoots Teacher at Virginia Elementary School, Police Say

A 6-year-old student is in custody following a shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News Friday afternoon that sent a first grade teacher to the hospital, Police Chief Steve Drew confirmed.

The first-grade educator is a female in her 30s. She suffered life-threatening injuries. “This was not a situation where we had a student, or any other individuals, going up and down the halls actively firing in a long shooting incident,” said Police Chief Steve Drew in a press conference held Friday. Instead, authorities believe the child deliberately acted with malice. He added, “This was not an accidental shooting.”

Newport News Public Schools Superintendent Dr. George Parker announced the school would be closed on Monday (Jan. 9) so staff and students could focus on their mental health. He said the shooting left him in shock and disheartened. The alarming incident comes as the nation continues to grapple with the influx of mass shootings that have taken place at schools and other public places. “We need to educate our children, and we need to keep them safe. We need the community’s support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth. I’m sounding like a broken record today because I continue to reiterate that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people,” said Parker.

As for the suspected shooter, Drew noted, “We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.” Through their investigation, the police chief said authorities hope to determine where the gun came from and they are looking into past interactions shared between the teacher and boy.

Police report, autopsy present different versions of Shanquella Robinson’s death in Mexico than what has been previously released

The FBI continues to investigate the death of Shanquella Robinson while in Mexico, federal agents will have to sort through different narratives to discover what actually happened. But a criminal defense attorney in Mexico says the autopsy should be trusted more than the police report. Some of those friends initially told Ms. Robinson’s mother that Ms. Robinson had died of alcohol poisoning, Mr. Robinson said. But a death certificate issued by Mexican officials and obtained by a Charlotte television station, WSOC-TV, listed the cause of death on Oct. 29 as “severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation,” or the dislocation of a ring-shaped bone that supports the skull.

The certificate stated that Ms. Robinson was found unconscious in a living room at an address in San José del Cabo, Mexico, and died about 15 minutes after she was injured. It did not mention alcohol poisoning.

Mr. Robinson said he was shocked that the Mexican authorities had allowed his daughter’s friends to leave the country after her death. She had flown from Charlotte to Mexico on Oct. 28, he said, one day before she died.

Bexar County Sheriff to investigate into how migrants went from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard

Sheriff Javier Salazar, said Monday evening his agency will open an investigation into the transportation of 48 Venezuelan migrants from the state to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

On Monday a news conference was held in regards to his understanding, that on Wednesday a Venezuelan migrant was paid a “bird dog fee” to recruit 50 migrants from a resource center in San Antonio.

The sheriff said he believes laws were not only broken in Bexar County in transporting nearly 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard but that parallel laws were also broken on the federal side. San Antonio is the county seat of Bexar County. The south Texas county, about 160 miles north of the Mexico border, has a population of about 2 million. A migrant appears to have been paid to recruit other Venezuelan migrants, who have been crossing the southwest border in greater numbers, from the area around a migrant resource center in San Antonio, Sheriff Salazar said. The migrants were “lured under false pretenses” with promises of work and a better life, he added.

Biden’s student loan forgiveness provokes countless questions

Millions of Americans process the news of federal student loan forgiveness, but many questions are emerging about how it will all work.

When will borrowers see the relief? Who’s actually eligible? Do borrowers have to apply? The U.S. Department of Education’s website has been slow to load this week with so many people searching for these answers. The debt forgiveness, comes after months of deliberations in the White House over fairness and fears that it could exacerbate inflation before the midterm elections. The amount of debt canceled depends on whether the borrower received a Pell grant to attend college. A federal Pell grant is only given to undergraduate students who "display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree" and "does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances," according to the Department of Education's Federal Student Aid office. Per data cited by the White House, Pell grants currently only cover a third of the cost of a four-year public college degree, which has led to increased borrowing.

Individual borrowers who make less than $125,000 yearly and married couples or heads of households who make less than $250,000 yearly will have up $10,000 of their federal student loan debt forgiven if they did not receive a Pell grant as an undergraduate student, per the FSA website.

In May of this year, three American tourists died at the five-star resort, where rooms start at $377 a night.

The couple had complained of feeling sick the night before. Three hotel guests, aged between 64 and 68, were ultimately pronounced dead. A fourth tourist, who survived, was also hospitalized.

An investigation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force found that the three tourists had died of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to CNN.

Federal Officials Charge Four Officers in Breonna Taylor Raid

Ex-detectives Joshua Jaynes and Brett Hankison and current officers Kyle Meany and Kelly Goodlett face charges that include civil rights offenses, unlawful conspiracies, unconstitutional use of force and obstruction, Attorney General Merrick Garland said. The indictments made public Thursday allege that Jaynes and Meany "drafted and approved what they knew was a false affidavit to support a search warrant for Ms. Taylor's home," Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in Washington. Monkeypox: What symptoms to look for and how it spreads

Monkeypox, a rare tropical disease spread by wild animals in West Africa, has unexpectedly spread abroad over the last two months, posing questions about what precisely it is and how dangerous it might be. The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. Prior to the 2022 outbreak, monkeypox had been reported in people in several central and western African countries. Previously, almost all monkeypox cases in people outside of Africa were linked to international travel to countries where the disease commonly occurs or through imported animals. These cases occurred on multiple continents.

Symptoms of monkeypox can include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches and backache

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Chills

  • Exhaustion

  • A rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus. The rash goes through different stages before healing completely.

  • The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.

Sometimes, people get a rash first, followed by other symptoms. Others only experience a rash.

Symptoms usually appear one to two weeks after infection. Read more on how to use caution while engaging with others in Health.

Ice Cube Lands $100 Million NFL Pledge For Contract With Black America

New York- The NFL is partnering with entertainer Ice Cube’s pact to aid Black-owned businesses and combat the growing wealth gap in America.

Jackson says he wants to add other sports leagues, including MLB and MLS, and says he has reached out to the NBA but hasn’t yet received a response. More than 73% of players in the NBA are black compared to 58% in the NFL, according to The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. The racial wealth gap has widened tremendously over the last 30 years. Among median and mean family wealth, white families outpace Black families by more than $100,000, according to data published in a September 2020 Federal Reserve report.

“This is how we decided to attack the wealth gap by going after big companies like the NFL,” Jackson says.

Panel Presents Evidence of Trump’s Refusal to Stop the January 6 Riot

New York- The House panel painted a detailed picture of how, as officials rushed to respond to an attack on the United States government, the commander in chief chose for hours to do nothing. In a final public hearing of the summer and one of the most dramatic of the inquiry, the panel provided an overall account of how, everyone’s life was in danger. From law enforcement officers, members of Congress and his own vice president were under threat, Trump could not be moved to act until after it was clear that the riot had failed to disrupt Congress’s session to confirm his election loss. “You’re the commander in chief. You’ve got an assault going on on the Capitol of the United States of America, and there’s nothing?” Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, told the panel. “No call? Nothing? Zero?” The evidence is pretty clear that the former person in office did not care if people loss their lives nor if he in fact would possibly lose his own. Let’s see how this plays out.

A man was shot and killed Sunday after someone tried to carjack him at a Peachtree Corners gas station, authorities said. There’s still an ongoing investigation.

Gwinnett police received a call that a person was shot at the QuikTrip at 5255 Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners around 12:30 p.m.

They said a man, identified Monday as 29-year-old Bradley Coleman, was found dead near a car at the air pumping station and that the suspects were last seen driving south on Peachtree Parkway.

“We all heard a gunshot, and immediately we kind of looked at each other. Kind of like? Is that what we thought we heard?” Jarrett Bailey said, who works at the business next to QuikTrip.

Bailey stood in shock about 20 feet from the gunfire on Sunday.

“The first thing went through my mind was everybody in the store being safe," he said.

Detectives said that based on their initial investigation, Coleman pulled into the air pumping station, with his passenger door nearest the machine, then got out to fill his tires.

Suspected gunman in custody after 6 killed, dozens wounded at Highland Park Fourth of July parade

API

What sounded at first like fireworks to the parents who had brought excited children to a charming Fourth of July parade in their town. All of America only wishes that’s what it was. It was yet another display of unpatriotic behavior.

But within seconds, as marching band members and politicians strutted down the street, horrified spectators realized the noise from a nearby rooftop was a high-powered rifle spraying bullets into the crowd, killing six people and wounding dozens. Police said 22-year-old Robert "Bobby" E Crimo III was taken into custody following a brief police pursuit that ended in north suburban Lake Forest. No word on why the gunman committed this crime.+

The Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson made history Thursday as the very first black woman sworn in as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jackson, 51, replaces Justice Stephen Breyer, whose resignation from the Supreme Court becomes effective at noon after his nearly 28 years of service there.

Jackson served eight years as a federal trial court judge and last June was confirmed for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia after also being nominated for that post by Biden.

Jackson is the first Supreme Court justice since Thurgood Marshall to have represented indigent criminal defendants as a public defender. +

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, overturned

NY History Image

The U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade on Friday, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.

Many supporters of abortions rights immediately slammed the ruling, while abortion opponents praised a decision they had long hoped for and worked to ensure. Including number “45”.

Protesters descended on the Supreme Court on Friday to speak out both for and against a decision that will upend decades of precedent in the U.S. This is in deed a dark day for women, teens and any young girl living in America. What message is this sending to the current generation? Guns and animals, now have more rights than women. What about and girls who may fall victim to predators? There are so many questions to this terrifying decision\. But the biggest question should be. Why do men in feel the need and desire to control a woman’s body? What gratification does it serve for them? This county does not want to assist most of its citizens. So, this overturn will be very interesting. Stay tuned for other methods of birth control being in jeopardy.

January, 1973 was the month liberation was set in place for HUMANS called women. +

Jan. 6 committee to detail the origins and reach of Trump’s election lies

Getty

New York- The Jan. 6 select committee, in its second of six scheduled public hearings, plans to highlight Monday the corrosive effect of Trump’s lie, and his weeks pumping it up with the help of political allies, friendly media megaphones and members of Congress. Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in the weeks between Election Day and Jan. 6, 2021, a haul heavily influenced by those efforts to sow doubt about the results of the election. The select committee says it intends to show that many of the people who joined that mob had been inundated by those messages from Trump and his allies, which may have contributed to their radicalization.

Academy award winner Viola Davis says a former director called her by his maid’s name ”Louise”

New York- Viola Davis has an Oscar, an Emmy and a Golden Globe. And countless other accolades.

She’s a veteran of film and television, producer, director and writer. One would think that would disqualify her from any stigmas associated with many other Black actors and actresses. For example, Davis, 56, told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival during one of it “Women in Motion” conversations , a director called her by his maid’s name which is “Louise”. While the incident happened many years ago. To hear that had even transpired is still mind boggling.

How? Davis shared the experience, “I knew him for 10 years and he called me Louise, and I find out that it’s because his maid’s name is Louise,” Davis said, without disclosing the director’s name. “I was maybe around 30 at the time, so it was a while ago. But what you have to realize is that those microaggressions happen all the time.”

So, what can we take away from this revelation from one of the worlds most gifted and talented beings? None of that matters when it comes to someone only focused on your color.-HM

Laws restricting lessons on racism are making it difficult for teachers to discuss the horrifying massacre in Buffalo

Just days after a white gunman opened fire and killing 10 Black people at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store, teacher Elizabeth Close began her high school ethnic studies class in Austin, Texas, by reminding her students about a new state law that requires her to provide balanced perspectives on “widely debated and currently controversial issues.”

New York- 5/19/22- Close told her students that under the law, one of several recently implemented across the country that limit the ways teachers can discuss racism and current events, she was obligated to inform them that there’s more than one way to view Saturday’s mass shooting.

On one hand, she explained that authorities are investigating the killings as a racially motivated hate crime carried out by an 18-year-old who reportedly wrote of his belief in a conspiracy theory that white Americans are being “replaced” by people of color through immigration, interracial marriage and integration.

“But I’m also supposed to tell you that that’s just one perspective,” Close recalled telling her students. “Another perspective is that this young man was out defending the world — or his kind — from being taken over.”

Close waited for her comment to fully register with her students, then added: “If you guys want to know why I’m thinking about quitting at the end of the year, it’s because of these types of policies — the fact that I have to have this conversation with you.”

Close said she was being intentionally provocative, trying to shock students into thinking critically about the Buffalo shooting as well as the Texas law. But she was also venting a frustration shared by many social studies teachers nationwide.

“I think we’re all just tired,” she said to NBC News.

Arby’s manager accused of urinating in milkshake mix

A manager at an Arby’s fast-food restaurant in Washington state has been accused of urinating into a milkshake mix that might then have been served to dozens of people. The investigation began when police caught wind of a computer downloading child pornography near the Arby's in Vancouver. Police connected the computer with Stephen Sharp, 29, a manager at the Arby's. Sharp then confessed to downloading and distributing the pornography, according to NBC New York

Vanilla flavored ‘condom pants’ get approval by FDA

The first underwear meant to protect against sexually transmitted infections during oral sex was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.

Loral, which are available as bikinis or shorties—are made of vanilla-flavored latex about as thin as condom material and form a seal on the inside of the thigh to keep fluids in, developer Melanie Cristol told the New York Times. They are to be used only once, like a condom.

On Thursday, Cristol's company will begin selling the underwear explicitly for infection protection.

Infections such as herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis can be transmitted through oral sex, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Until now, the only FDA-authorized product for protection during oral sex was a dental dam, a thin sheet of latex polyurethane typically held in place with hands to form a barrier between the mouth and genitals, according to the Times.

"The FDA's authorization of this product gives people another option to protect against STIs during oral sex," Courtney Lias, director of the FDA office that led the review of the underwear, told the Times.

"Oral sex is not totally risk-free," Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, director of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, told the Times.

Senate approves Lisa Cook as first Black woman on Federal Reserve board of governors

New York-The Senate confirmed economist Lisa Cook on Tuesday to serve on the Federal Reserve's board of governors, making her the first Black woman to do so in the institution's 108-year history.

Her approval was on a narrow, party-line vote of 51-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the decisive vote.

Senate Republicans argued that she is unqualified for the position, saying she doesn't have sufficient experience with interest rate policy. They also said her testimony before the Senate Banking Committee suggested she wasn't sufficiently committed to fighting inflation, which is running at four-decade highs.

Cook has a doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and has been a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State since 2005. She was also a staff economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers from 2011 to 2012 and was an adviser to President Biden's transition team on the Fed and bank regulatory policy.

Kamala Harris, upset at GOP after vote to protect abortion rights fails in Senate “How dare they?”

The Vice President has a valid question, which she delivered more as a statement of outrage. It came in a speech to Emily’s List, an abortion rights group, just hours after the leak w as drafted to the Supreme Court’s opinion indicating that at least five of the court’s conservative justices were prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade. That would eliminate the constitutional right to privacy that has guaranteed access to abortion for women for more than half a century.

“How dare they tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her own body?” Ms. Harris said at the gala in Washington, D.C. “How dare they try to stop her from determining her own future? How dare they try to deny women their rights and their freedoms?”

Anti-abortion legislation in 5 states gives rapists and their families the right to sue abortion providers for at least $10k

In Texas, Idaho, Tennessee, Ohio and Oklahoma, bounty-style laws banning abortion offer no exceptions for rape or incest and, in some cases, may offer rapists and their families more rights than pregnant women. Abortion bans set to take effect if Roe v. The penalties vary widely by state, and also can include hefty fines or the suspension of a medical license.

“High-value man” YouTuber Kevin Sanuels Dies, 56

Controversial YouTube creator and self-styled relationship guru Kevin Samuels has died at age 56.

Among his fans, Samuels was hailed for his straight-talking unfiltered approach to relationship and lifestyle content which drew a following of 1.42 million subscribers on YouTube and an additional 1.2 million followers on Instagram.

But elsewhere, critics saw Samuels as someone who had risen to infamy for spouting misogynoir, anti-fat rhetoric, and bullying content, contributing to a toxic online culture. He popularized the term “high-value man,” which has become hallmark language for a niche brand of male-led podcasts peddling hatred against women.
