The Color Purple Makes HERstory at the Box Office

Celie’s journey is still sought out as triumphant in the musical rendition of, The Color Purple, “I’m Still Here”. That was just one element of history that was made. The legacy of The Color Purple is an adaptation of the was originally produced by Spielberg and Quincy Jones, along with Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, who also produced the Broadway musical of Alice Walker's Pultizer-Prize-winning novel. With amazing actresses such as Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson and Fantasia Barrino leading the way in the current film. Academy Award predictions have been made. And rightfully so. The entire cast was incredible.

According to reliable sources, the movie ‘The Color Purple’ is expected to have a budget of approximately $100 million.

The latest rendition of "The Color Purple" surpassed box office expectations with an $18 million domestic gross on Monday, making it the biggest Christmas Day opening for a film in over a decade and clocking in as the second highest-grossing movie ever released on the holiday. According to Variety, falling only to the 2009 Sherlock Holmes adaptation starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law that opened to $24.6 million (the equivalent of about $35 million today).

The movie was most popular among audiences over 55, who made up 25% of viewers and rated it highly at 97%. Directed by Blitz Bazawule, it also saw significant turnout from women over 25, who comprised 62% of the audience and gave it a 94% grade. Men over 25 represented 21% of viewers with an 86% rating, followed by women under 25 at 14% (91% rating), and finally, men under 25 were the smallest group at 4%, yet they still gave it an 89% approval rating.
