Kelis Speaks out on “Milkshake” sample used by Beyoncé

Does Kelis have a valid point regarding fellow artists sampling each other’s music regardless of record contracts or ownership?

What is it with sampling and rights? Mainly the artists rights. Recently recording artist, Kelis spoke out on the matter. Her hit single Milkshake was recently sampled by Beyoncé’s latest album, Renaissance.

After Kelis called out Beyoncé and Pharrell for the use on “Energy,” Beyonce’s management acted quite swiftly by removing the popular adlib, “La La La La”. And on cue. The BeyHive went in on Kelis sighting that she should be happy that the sample was even used.  But, does Kelis have a point? One fan on social media made a good point.

“Why was Robin S given flowers and a card from Beyoncé? But Kelis seems not to get the same respect?”

Kelis responded via social media about how she felt disrespected. “My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” Kelis commented. “Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

And she also wen on to say, “My real beef is not only with Beyoncé—because at the end of the day, she sampled a record, she’s copied me before, she’s done this before. So have many other artists,” Kelis said in an Instagram video posted on July 28. “The issue is that not only are we female artists, Black female artists in an industry that—there’s not that many of us. We’ve met each other. We know each other. We have mutual friends. It’s not hard to keep in contact.”

Robin S. shared her lovely bouquet on social media. The ‘Show Me Love” singer was very appreciative for the acknowledgement.
