Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes first Black woman on Supreme Court
Jackson was sworn in as the 116th justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and the first Black woman to do so.
Judge Jackson served on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She was confirmed to this role unanimously and issued more than 500 opinions on cases involving a range of important issues—from the separation of powers to the reach of the Fourth Amendment to collective bargaining rights. She additionally has prior experience as a Vice Chair and Commissioner on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, as a federal public defender, as a lawyer in private practice, and as a law clerk at all three levels of the federal Judiciary, including for Justice Breyer.
