Viola Davis “Louise”
Academy award winner Viola Davis says a former director called her by his maid’s name ”Louise”
New York- Viola Davis has an Oscar, an Emmy and a Golden Globe. And countless other accolades.
She’s a veteran of film and television, producer, director and writer. One would think that would disqualify her from any stigmas associated with many other Black actors and actresses. For example, Davis, 56, told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival during one of it “Women in Motion” conversations , a director called her by his maid’s name which is “Louise”. While the incident happened many years ago. To hear that even transpired is still mind boggling.
How? Davis shared the experience, “I knew him for 10 years and he called me Louise, and I find out that it’s because his maid’s name is Louise,” Davis said, without disclosing the director’s name. “I was maybe around 30 at the time, so it was a while ago. But what you have to realize is that those microaggressions happen all the time.”
So, what can we take away from this revelation from one of the worlds most gifted and talented beings? None of that matters when it comes to someone only focused on your color.-HM
