Melanin Misconception

People with fairer skin have less melanin and are more prone to sunburn. As a result, they should wear sunscreen consistently to prevent sunburn and chronic sun damage to the skin. So there’s the misconception that those with dark skin do not need to worry about excess sun exposure. But that’s not necessarily true. A study has shown that more than 13% of black people received a sunburn in their life. No one is immune. Some studies show more than 60% of Black persons do not wear sunscreen. Don’t let this be your mindset. Everyone, including those with dark skin, need to wear sunscreen every day. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is one that protects from both the damaging UVA and UVB rays.

You've purchased a new bathing suit, but you need to wash it before wearing it for the first time. Washing a bathing suit is not just a matter of tossing it in the washing machine. While it is not difficult to do, to prolong the suit's shape and colors, there are certain things you need to do.

* Fill the sink with cold water. Use a mild hand-washing liquid fabric detergent. To dry use a large towel or mesh drying screen to preserve the look.

Check the care label of your bathing suit before laundering. Make sure to find out what type of material the bathing suit is made of; spandex and lycra hold their shape longer, polyester can last under heat a little longer and chlorine-resistant fabrics are safer the only ones which can tolerate pool water better. Make sure to check to see if your bathing suit has any special care instructions. Certain bathing suits have attached decorations that need to be removed before laundering.
