The Third Annual Harvard Law School Black Alumnae High was held at the in New York at the Sherman & Sterling law firm in July. Attorney Michelle Ifill served as host and it was nothing short of empowering. Graduating classes of women, who are now living and practicing aw around the world.

Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch was in attendance. The Alumnae shared her journey from into the legal field all the up to the Whit House.

The rich history involving Black attorney’s in America and it’s colleges are a story to be told in it’s entirety. Charlotte E. Ray was the first black female lawyer in the United States. She studied at the Institution for the Education of Colored Youth in Washington, D.C., and went on to teach and study law at Howard University. Upon admission to the District of Columbia bar in 1872, Ray became not only the first woman admitted to practice in the District of Columbia but also the first black woman licensed to practice law in the United States.

Unfortunately, Charlotte Ray’s career was cut short due to racial prejudice. She opened a law office in the nation’s capital but was unable to obtain enough clients to sustain her practice. She ultimately returned to New York City to teach in the public school system. Many successful women of color graduated form Harvard, yet it’s not held in it’s highest standards. Engagements and gatherings such as this puts the magnitude of their achievements in to a far greater regard.

Ifill is an accomplished and innovative deal maker, Michelle has led legal organizations as large as 100 attorneys and staff persons in support of an $18 billion global  business unit. Later in her career,  she was responsible for primary legal oversight and support of the chief administration office, which included sourcing, global real estate,  vendor management, sustainability, aviation & fleet management.  She also had responsibility for a variety of information technology, cyber security, intellectual property and financial services areas.
